ABOUT US
Mission Statement

The number of underrepresented students has and continues to be a concern to many individuals on our campus. As progressive organizations, Hermanos Unidos and Sigma Alpha Zeta are aware and concerned with the issues that institutions of higher education partake in, such as the University of California. With the elimination of affirmative action and the increased competitiveness of admissions into these fine institutions, the university, in conjunction with student organizations must work together to prepare, attract, and educate highly qualified underrepresented students. In addition, less qualified students who lack the appropriate resources must also be prepared to attain a higher education. Sigma Alpha Zeta and Hermanos Unidos were eager to work with the university to take up the challenge of diversifying our institutions; as a result, the College Link Outreach Program was formed in 1999. Since then, C.L.O.P. continues to be executed to the fullest to meet the need of these underrepresented students and to introduce these underrepresented students and familiarize them with the great university system that is the University of California.
Hermanos Unidos, in collaboration with Sigma Alpha Zeta, began by bringing 40 low-income high school students to the University of California, Santa Barbara campus in 1999. The program provided participants with a window into the daily life of a college student. The efforts of the program proved to be a success when seven participants enrolled into UCSB the following quarter. Those individuals were
provided with a wide range of networks, resources, and support groups
throughout their college career. After fifteen years of our program's execution, more students continue to participate in our program and hence, our enrollment numbers have increased. This year, in our
sixteenth attempt to execute C.L.O.P., 120 low-income students from the Los Angeles Unified School District will be invited to participate in an
all-expense-paid program. This program will commence April 23, 2015 and end April 25, 2015 at the UC Santa Barbara campus. With assistance from the Office of Student Life, the Student Initiated Outreach Program, Office of Admissions, Associated Students and many other resources, participants are able to spend this time uncovering the wonders of college life and what the University of California, Santa Barbara has to offer.
OUR STORY
Hermanos Unidos, a Latino based organization and Sigma Alpha Zeta, a multicultural sorority are aware and concerned with the issues that institutions of higher education partake in. Beginning in 1999 Hermanos Unidos and Sigma Alpha Zeta, joined forces to bring 40 low-income high school students to the University of California, Santa Barbara campus. Participants had the opportunity to experience college life and its reality. The program provided them with a multitude of networks, resources, and support groups throughout their college career. With the progression of our program more and more students continue to participate and our enrollment numbers have increased. This year, in our sixteenth attempt to execute C.L.O.P., 120 low-income students from a variety of disadvantaged Los Angeles schools are invited to participate in an all-expense-paid program. This program will commence April 23, 2015 and end April 25, 2014 at the UC Santa Barbara campus. With the assistance from the Office of Student Life, Early Academic Outreach, Office of Admissions and Outreach, and many other outreach resources, participants are able to spend this time discovering the wonders of college life and what the University of California, Santa Barbara has to offer.
The College Link Outreach Program is comprised of two nights and three days. Within the course of these days, both, the members of Hermanos Unidos and Sigma Alpha Zeta volunteer many hours to plan this event. Our hard work and dedication make this program successful. The planning of CLOP begins as early as the summer and fall quarters and gets underway during the winter quarter. Each organization is committed in the success of the program and the success of each participant. Throughout the course of the program, organization members are highly encouraged to establish networking relationships and ensure that all participants are benefiting from the program. By establishing close connections, participants have confidence in their efforts to gain the appropriate skills to obtain a post-secondary education. College Link Outreach Program continues to meet the need of these underrepresented students and to introduce high school students to the UC system.
